Freerice.com has been around for a number of years now, and it’s been successful in its goal to fight world hunger. The site allows users to donate to the World Food Programme simply by playing educational trivia games.
How Does It Work?
Users can choose a subject in the following categories:
- Humanities
- English
- Math
- Chemistry
- Language Learning
- Geography
- Sciences
- Test Prep
You then go through a series of multiple choice questions. For each correct answer, you earn 10 grains of rice. You can answer as many questions as you like for as long as you like, and the rice continues to add up. (You can have well over 1,000 grains in 10 minutes.)
The “grains of rice” is a nice way for users to get a very general idea of what they’re contributing. However, no one at the World Food Programme is counting individual grains of rice. What actually occurs with the donations is that the rice money comes from ad revenue produced by multiple users playing the trivia games. The World Food Programme uses that money to buy the actual rice that is donated.
- Cost: Free
- Ease: Very easy
- Requirements: Internet access
Advice For Using Freerice.com
While the site is educational, at the college level it isn’t going to replace your regular studying. The subjects are fairly generalized and won’t delve too deeply into any topics. The site will be the most useful for introductory classes for things like chemistry and literature. It is also great for anyone taking a beginner’s language course. It teaches vocabulary pretty effectively in much the same way as flashcards.
